Paul Gauguin, French post-impressionist and contemporary of and close friend to Van Gogh, left France and went to Tahiti in 1891 (the year after Van Gogh's death) in search of new, exotic scenes and themes.
This painting is one of the first he painted in Tahiti, where he would spend the next 12 years, and it exhibits the artist's characteristic post-Impressionist style. In it, Gauguin used intense colors to express the joy and serenity inspired by the lush tropical site.
