2021 online summer camps

Picture
All online camps can be executed with traditional materials (paper, pen, pencil, etc). Materials lists to be posted soon. The camps marked with an asterisk can alternatively be done digitally (with a program in which the student is already proficient such as ProCreate, Sketchbook, etc.). Each day of camp will break for 30 minutes midway through to give students an opportunity to rest their eyes, move around, and grab a snack if desired.

Online Camp: Drawing

Working in a variety of materials (including graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastels) students will learn to sketch more accurately as they build their observation and rendering skills. Perspective, grids, positive/negative spaces are just a few of the techniques that will be covered.

Online Camp: Painting with Acrylics

Acrylics are quite versatile and enable an artist to achieve an expansive range of visual effects. We learn how to manipulate the medium to achieve some of those effects as we explore color mixing, underpainting, and composition. Each student will create a final painting of their preferred subject on a stretched canvas.

Online Camp: Watercolor

Students will build confidence in working with watercolor as they explore a variety of techniques specific to the medium (gradated washes, wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry, dry drush, splattering, glazing, and more). They'll have the opportunity to express their individual style through landscape, still life, and abstract creations.

Manga

Students may work in the traditional media of choice (Copics, colored pencil, graphite, Microns) or choose to work digitally utilizing an app in which they have established proficiency.

Online Camp: Manga - Comics*

We’ll be exploring visual storytelling in this session! Students will learn about the fundamentals of visual storytelling from different comic styles around the world. They’ll then apply their learning to create their own comic in the style of their choice.

Online Camp: Manga - Character Expression & Body Language*

Students will explore the benefits of using emotions in visual storytelling. Starting with a new (or existing) character design, they’ll learn how to push it further by utilizing both facial expressions and body language to convey emotion. They’ll also learn how to draw and adjust proportions of both the body and face to bring their characters to life.

Online Camp: Manga - Chibi Design*
In Manga and Anime, a chibi is something small, short, stubby, and cute. Who could resist?! In this camp, students will create learn how to use exagerated proportions and features to create their own adorable chibis.

Online Camp: Manga - Creature Design*
The possibilities in designing creatures and beasts are limitless and of course, super exciting! From rough thumbnails to tight renderings, with some anatomy exploration thrown in between, students will bring creatures from their imaginations to life.

Online Camp: Video Game - Storyboards*
A storyboard is essentially a visual outline that consists of a sequence of images depicting setting, plot, emotions, and other fundamental principles of a storyline. Through a fun and engaging process, students will learn how to break a simple story down into a comprehensive storyboard.

Online Camp: Video Game - Environments*
The environment art is a critical component of setting the tone of a game. Starting with loose thumbnail sketches then moving toward a highly rendered conceptual drawing, students will learn to use texture, composition, color, and lighting to create unique worlds from their imaginations.
All camps require a minimum of three (confirmed) enrolled students no later than one week prior to the camp start date. If this minimum is not met by that date, the camp will be canceled and your payment will be refunded in full.
